Art Journaling – week seven and eight

These past two weeks have been busy ones! I want to share with you what I have been learning from my creativity coach Whitney Ferre. She teaches a painting coarse called Painting Made Easy, and it is exactly that! Although, not without it’s challenges for sure, let me explain.

First was a mini lesson on mixing colours. I say mini because very few words were used, mostly hands on, just need to play around and figure it out. I have been told by other artists that colour mixing is a constant learning process.

The most important thing you need to know about mixing colours is opposite, or complimentary colours. Get yourself a colour wheel, it is invaluable! Primary colours are red, blue and yellow and the secondary colours are green, purple, and orange. With the primary colours, plus black and white, you can make any colour. The complimentary colours are: red/green, blue/orange, and purple/yellow. Look around you right now and as you go about your day, notice these colour combinations everywhere! Mixing the complimentary colours gives you earthy tones or shadows, but you need to be careful not to create mud!

Using a canvas, I played around with mixing colours. The first problem I had was that I could not make purple! Turns out that my red was not the correct tint of red, it needs to be a cool red. This is now the first layer.

Then I painted an outline of my new favorite symbol, the owl.

Next layer is to colour in the outline, keeping in mind colour choices. The complimentary colours will make it more interesting. Remember that you are the artist, you have the ability to create the change you want to see, as Whitney say, the canvas is a great reflection of our life process!

I am not done with this owl, he still needs some work and more layers added. Kinda like life, always more to learn and process and change and add to our lives. That is, if we want to live life to the full!
